Dorothy House Hospice Care has been rated as ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Outstanding is the highest available rating and places Dorothy House in the top 6% of adult social care providers nationally.

The recent inspection in September and October 2016 included an unannounced three-day visit by four inspectors to Dorothy House Hospice Care in Winsley and its Outreach Centres in Trowbridge and Peasedown St John.

The inspectors assessed patients’ personal care records and talked to patients, carers, family members and staff, as well as measuring the hospice’s performance against five essential standards of quality; that it is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

Dorothy House provides specialist, palliative and end of life care across 700 square miles and serves a population of 550,000 people in B&NES and Somerset and Wiltshire.

Below are some of the highlights from the CQC report:

– “Outstanding partnership work enabled the hospice to deliver co-ordinated, person-centred care. Dorothy House also improved access to end of life care for hard to reach groups such as homeless people through training and education.”

– “The hospice developed a bespoke nutritional assessment tool for people receiving end of life care, enabling staff to support patients to eat and drink what they want. Excellent catering services combined with innovative support from a nutritionist means people’s individual eating and hydration needs are really well met.”

– “Outstanding work takes place supporting patients’ children and young people either facing bereavement or coping with grief.”

– “Excellent practical and emotional support is provided by this team of social workers who offer families help with applying for benefits, advice on patient rights and support on housing through links with local social and housing services.”

– “Staff went the extra mile for the patients and families they supported. Examples include; arranging weddings for patients at the Hospice, helping to reunite estranged families and arranging for a dying patient to have a visit from their favourite horse. Staff understood how to promote patient comfort and plan options for their future care.”

John Davies, CEO of Dorothy House, said of the CQC result: “I am extremely proud of the team at Dorothy House and delighted that the CQC has recognised the Hospice’s standard of care as Outstanding. This result has been a collective effort as Dorothy House is well supported by our local Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and the RUH’s, Specialist Palliative Care Team among other partners.”
