Students from King Edward’s School in Bath have entered pieces into the National Gallery’s Take One Picture initiative.

Every year, the gallery chooses one painting in its collection to inspire cross-curricular work in primary schools across the country.

Year 4 students explored the idea of triumph to create their vases, using their personal experiences – such as earning a belt in taekwondo or learning to ride a bike – to help develop their patterns and style of vase. After modelling and firing the vases and applying a glaze, the final decoration was added – gold lustre and photographic transfers of the pupils at a moment of personal achievement.

Year 6’s ceramic bas-relief tiles were inspired by Rubens’ work and the concept of the modern day procession, such as athletes parading at the Rio Olympic and Paralympics and the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations. Once complete all 60 terracotta tiles can be laid out, one after the other to create a parade.

With the ceramics finished and on their way to the National Gallery, KES is hoping that this will be the forth year in a row that the school’s entries will be selected to be displayed at the National Gallery over the summer.
